On
Oct. 19, Yomiuri Shimbun
reported that Japans CO2 emissions in 2010 will be about
14% higher than in 1990, failing to attain its target of keeping emissions
to the 1990 level. This estimate was made by the Central Research
Institute of the Electric Power Industry. Despite the nations
flagging financial system, its aging society, and the sluggish Asian
economy, the Institute estimated that Japan would be able to attain a real
average annual economic growth rate of 1.6% by 2010, but average energy
consumption would increase by an annual 0.6%, energy-saving measures
notwithstanding. To curb emissions, the Institute urged reinforcement of
energy-saving measures and increasing nuclear power generation.
