Journal
literature in electronic formats represents challenges and opportunities
for library and individual subscribers. University and other institutional
libraries have entered a new era in providing periodical literature and
are facing the conflicting forces of fiscal constraint and access to
information. A significant issue libraries face is providing full-text,
online journal literature to teaching and research faculty and their
students while trying to maintain a sense of fiscal responsibility in
making the information available.
Project JSTOR (Journal STORage) is supported by continuing funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. JSTOR provides an archive of scholarly journals with the ability to search by title words, author names, or keywords. Seventy-four journals are currently available, including the following publishersecology titles (with their respective ranges of JSTOR coverage):
Annual Reviews
Ecological Society of America
JSTOR agreements with publishers provide a moving wall of two to five years between the most recently published issue of a journal title and the most recent access to that title provided by JSTOR (this protects publishers from potential loss of revenues from current issues being available online).
The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) was created by member institutions of the Association of Research Libraries to establish a partnership with publishers to develop high-quality, prestigious, and economically feasible scholarly journals. Publishing partners so far include the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and Evolutionary Ecology Research. While no climate-change journals are yet available, it is likely that there soon will be.
The following inventory continues from last month the listing of online journal titles currently available for topics related to global climate change. If readers know of online titles not appearing on these two lists, please send the appropriate titles and URLs to Fred Stoss at fstoss@acsu.buffalo.edu, who will provide an update to online periodicals (newsletters, journals, and magazines) in a future issue of Global Climate Change Digest.
