NEWS... BP Amoco to Provide Cleaner Fuels
Item #d99jan39
A
news item distributed by the USEPA quoted John Browne, CEO of BP Amoco,
announcing at the Detroit Economic Club that his company will begin
providing cleaner fuels to 40 cities worldwide within two years. These
formulations will be produced with a new technology that provides fuels
with minimal or no sulfur content. Sulfur in gasoline adds to air
pollution and acid precipitation. His speech also touched on climate
change, for which, he said, the evidence is too serious to ignore.
BP has previously set a target of reducing emissions from its refineries,
oil fields, and petrochemical plants by at least 10% by the year 2010 from
a 1990 baseline. That commitment has now been extended to cover Amocos
activities, as well. He also welcomed the U.S. governments support
for legislation that will give credit to companies who take early action
on greenhouse-gas emissions, which he called an important incentive
to start making progress immediately. BP has already set up a
trading system within the company to cut emissions in the most
cost-effective way, and that system will be expanded during the next 18
months to include all the activities of BP Amoco. The full text of his
speech is available on the BP Amoco website at
