In its May 13 edition, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (May 13)
reported that Texas Governor George held a news conference on May 12 in
which he stated I believe there is global warming. ... The last time
I wasnt certain of the science. Ive had some briefings
recently and Im becoming more convinced that the science proves
theres global warming.
On April 15, 1999, following a two-day meeting between 60 union leaders
and leaders of environmental groups, the AFL-CIO and the Sierra Club
issued this joint statement: The transition in the global energy
economy is threatening both workers rights and the climate. We commit ourselves to
crafting together a package of worker friendly domestic carbon emissions
reduction measures.
On May 5, 1999, the board of directors of the Western Fuels Association
passed a resolution praising the National Rural Electric Cooperative
Association (NRECA) for its support of the Byrd-Hagel resolution and
Senator Murkowskis Energy & Climate Policy Act of 1999,
both of which oppose U.S. participation in the Kyoto Protocol. The
resolution also called upon the American Public Power Association to
rededicate itself to its historic commitment to the well-being of electric
consumers by recognizing the importance of coal-fired electricity and by
joining NRECA and Western Fuels in defense of coal-fired electric
generation.
