British Look to Renewable Energy Sources (JUNE 1999)
Item #d99jun40
On Apr. 1, 1999, Bridge News reported that Britains Department of
Trade & Industry has committed itself to supply 10% of the United
Kingdoms electricity by renewable resources by 2010. The Department
expects to accomplish this goal by requiring public electricity suppliers
to contract for a defined amount of electricity from renewable sources.
The story also notes that about 40% of previous renewable-energy projects
(mostly wind-power ventures) have failed because of opposition from local
communities; projects to extract energy from waste and landfills are on
the increase, however.
