NEWS... ASME View of Kyoto Protocol
Item #d99mar36
Electricity Daily reported that the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers has issued a statement that the Kyoto Protocol timetable for
reduction in greenhouse gases is "unrealistic" and that the
compliance problems will be "enormous." The ASME statement
pointed out that it often takes decades to develop, test, and implement
major technological changes and warned that "in order to make major
progress in meeting the time frame set by the Kyoto Protocol for the U.S.
severe distortion in fuel utilization must be accepted, and large capital
expenditures for technology development and deployment will be required."
The statement called for "a new generation of nuclear fission
reactors," noting that "the nuclear option must be included in
any long-term strategy for the reduction of carbon emissions."
