On May 5, 1999, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that it is organizing a Center for Climate Change and Environmental Forecasting. It will be located at the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center in Cambridge, Mass., and will conduct research, develop solutions to specific problems, address environmental issues and strategies, and provide analytical support for the climate-research community as well as serving as a departmental clearinghouse for climate- and environment-related analysis, research, models, system designs, initiatives, and best practices.
