| The first meeting of
the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC was an historic event
that took place March 28-April 17, 1995 in Berlin. At this meeting, a decision
was made to establish a pilot phase for Activities Implemented Jointly
(AIJ) among parties to the convention. The United States is a strong supporter
of AIJ, and in 1993 was the first country to initiate its own JI program,
the USIJI. The criteria established for AIJ are similar to those established
for USIJI. The pilot phase, which is scheduled to end by the year 2000,
provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the viability of JI as
a practical and equitable strategy for helping to meet the objectives of
the UNFCCC. USIJI plays an important role in this effort. |
